WASHINGTON, D.C. —Shipments of auto and truck tires in North America will grow 3.7 percent in 2000 to more than 328 million units—marking the industry's fifth consecutive record year, according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association's Tire Market Analysis Committee.
The ongoing recall of 6.5 million light truck tires, which otherwise would have been replaced in 2001 and 2002, contributed to this increase. As a result, shipments in 2001 are likely to fall just short of this year's total.
With the help of a continued strong economy, shipments should resume record highs in 2002, the committee predicted.
