ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Oct. 27, 2000) — Monro Muffler Brake Inc. is close to adding a second line of tires at its 529 Monro Muffler and Speedy Muffler locations as part of the company´s plan to broaden its business and attract new customers, according to Robert G. Gross, president and CEO.
Mr. Gross declined to identify which new brand, but said the company expects a final agreement in the coming weeks.
Monro locations have carried the Bridgestone and Firestone lines exclusively since 1997, and Mr. Gross said the negative publicity surrounding the Firestone brand played a role in the company´s decision to add a second line.
Presently, Monro derives about 7 percent of annual revenues from tire sales. Adding a second line will help the company expand this to 10 to 12 percent of sales, he said; Monro´s sales through six months this year stood at $121.1 million.
Monro´s service outlets are located primarily throughout New England, long the eastern seaboard as far south as South Carolina, and as far west as Indiana and Michigan.
