NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 24, 2000)—Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. has reached an agreement with the son and daughter of a Texas couple who died last year following an allegedly tire-related accident in Brownsville, Texas. Details of the agreement were not disclosed.
The product liability suit, filed in a state district court in Rio Grande City, Texas, was scheduled for trial Nov. 13. Had that occurred, the case would have represented the first such lawsuit to come to trial following the company´s Aug. 9 recall of 6.5 million ATX, ATX II and Wilderness AT tires.
The suit was brought by the son and daughter of the accident victims, Nidia and Patricio Leal, following the May 30 1999 crash of the couple´s Ford Explorer which was blamed on the alleged failure of a Firestone tire.
A BFS spokesman said the company had reached an agreement in principle with the plaintiffs and wanted to finalize the details as quickly as possible.
