LOS ANGELES (Oct. 4, 2000)—Tech International will stop manufacturing at its Los Angeles plant and scatter its Truflex/Pang Rubber Co. operations to other company facilities within the next year.
Truflex/Pang´s support functions such as purchasing, customer service and accounting will be transferred to Johnstown in the next 60 days. The firm will turn the Truflex/Pang plant into a warehouse to accommodate West Coast customers, the company said.
Tech International still is assessing the firm´s six group company production facilities to determine where it will be most feasible and cost-effective to produce the Truflex/Pang product lines.
The spokesman said most of the company´s production will be moved to Tech International´s Johnstown, Ohio, plant along with top management and members of its North American sales and marketing team.
"The Truflex/Pang tire repair, chemical and industrial rubber operations and production functions in Los Angeles virtually duplicate our operation and production functions within other Tech group companies," Michael Chambers, vice president and chief operating officer, said in a prepared statement.
"Simply put, with Truflex/Pang, we have a redundancy of functions. Thus, we´ve opted to transfer key Truflex/Pang job functions as well as production to our other facilities," Mr. Chambers said.
Johnstown-based Tech International acquired Truflex/Pang in September 1998. Tech International produces tire and tube repair materials and related products while Truflex/Pang provides hot and cold vulcanizing cements, PVC, urethane cements, rubber-to-rubber, rubber-to-metal and other substrates. It also supplies lining, lagging, cement and tool needs.
Tech International decided to transfer the Los Angeles operations at the beginning of the year, a company spokesman said.
"The benefits of the consolidation include greater quality, more aesthetic repair units, improved service and delivery times," he said.
The spokesman said the consolidation of resources will not affect the Truflex/Pang and Tech International individual brands. The company´s products are sold through the same distributor but each company will uphold its own product name, he added.
"Truflex will stay Truflex and the same for Tech International," he said.
The company said employees affected by the Los Angeles downsizing were offered severance packages and employment opportunities in Johnstown.
The firm now operates three plants in India, one in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, and one in Johnstown.
