NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 25, 2000) — There have been many dire predictions about the future of the Firestone brand name, but business continues.
Honda of America Manufacturing Inc. has increased its orders for Firestones, asking for thousands more tires for its North American Civic model´s production.
Nashville-based Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. was supposed to have supplied 75 percent of the Civics built in Ohio and Alliston, Ontario, in the next six months — about 150,000 cars. Instead, Firestones will go on 100 percent of the Civics, or just under 200,000 cars.
The change displaces Honda´s other tire supplier, Dunlop Tire Corp. (operated by Goodyear), as a Civic supplier for at least six months. A Honda spokesman said the change was prompted by an "issue" with the supplier not meeting Honda´s production needs, but would not elaborate.
