CANTON, Ohio—Approximately 7,500 tires caught fire and destroyed a warehouse in Canton that stored and redistributed used tires for companies in the U.S. and abroad.
About 50 firefighters battled the blaze Aug. 18 after receiving the call at 2 a.m. The warehouse, operated by Used Tire Co., stored 4,000 truck tires and 3,500 passenger tires, as well as some shreds outside the building, said Stephen Prendes, chief of the Canton Fire Prevention Bureau.
He said the fire had spread to two service trucks and caused an estimated $500,000 in damages.
The cause of the fire still is under investigation.
