How many recalled: 6.5 million that are still in use, including 3.8 million Radial ATX and ATX II tires and 2.7 million Wilderness ATs.
The recall plan: Three phases, starting in Arizona, California, Florida and Texas; second phase will be in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, Oklahoma and Tennessee; the remaining states will follow.
The problem: Treads allegedly separate from the tires, reportedly in warmer climate areas.
OE on what vehicles: Ford Explorers, Rangers, F-150 pickups and Broncos; Jeep Cherokees; and some other SUVs and pickups made by General Motors, Toyota and Subaru.
Ford's earlier action: Replaced Firestone tires for free on vehicles sold in Venezuela, Ecuador, Thailand, Malaysia, Colombia and Saudi Arabia.
Federal probe: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began an investigation of the tires in May after at least 270 consumer complaints.
How many deaths: To date, NHTSA estimates at least 46.
