MILAN, Italy (June 22, 2000)—Pirelli S.p.A. is planning an official opening of the first of five tire plants using the company´s new flexible manufacturing process, the Modular Integrated Robotized System.
Pirelli said it will have an official presentation and factory demonstration July 11 at its new "e-factory" in Milan, near the company´s worldwide headquarters.
The robotized MIRS process covers the entire production cycle and reduces tire processing steps from the traditional 14 to three, the company said.
Pirelli claims the benefits of its new MIRS system include a 25-percent reduction in production costs and an 80-percent improvement in labor productivity.
The Milan-based company hopes to have five MIRS plants, with a collective total capacity of 10 million tires, operational in Europe, the U.S., South American and Asia by 2002.
