LEAVITTSBURG, Ohio—In the rough and tumble world of supply and demand, a loss recently turned into a gain for Denman Tire Corp. When off-road and specialty private brand tire marketer Dick Cepek Inc. went out of business earlier this year, one of its major suppliers, Leavittsburg, Ohio-based Denman, started hustling to fill the vacuum in its production schedule created by Cepek's departure. As luck would have it, Hoosier Tire wanted a supplier for a new niche-market tire.
If some white knight rides in to buy and try to resurrect the Cepek brand, "We're out of capacity. We can't make any more tires for them right now," said Jim Pearl, Denman's executive vice president sales and marketing.
That's partly because Denman recently began building for Hoosier a new radial hot rod tire line—called Pro-Street—aimed at the booming market for builders of open fender hot rods. Mr. Pearl said Denman shipped the first two truckloads of the tire in late May.
The company is currently making Pro-Streets in size 31218.50 R15, but will expand production to include seven or eight sizes for fronts and rears, he added.
