CLERMONT-FERRAND, France (June 2, 2000)—For the first time in company history, Group Michelin sold more tires in North America than in Europe.
At Michelin´s annual meeting, Chairman Edouard Michelin said overall North American unit sales rose 12 percent last year—truck tire sales increased 15 percent and passenger and light truck tire sales rose 8 percent.
Overall unit sales in Europe grew 1 percent over 1998.
Michelin´s overall sales in Europe ($7.5 billion) are still larger than in North America ($5.1 billion) because of retailing, wheel manufacturing and other non-tire business.
In the first quarter of 2000, Michelin North America Inc. recorded 12.4-percent growth in North American unit sales volume over 1999, Michelin said.
