TORONTO—Finnish tire maker Nokian Tyres P.L.C. chose the Tire Dealers Association of Canada national convention and trade show in Toronto earlier this year to showcase its newest NRW "All-Weather Plus" performance tire. The new Nokian NRW, which differs both in compounding and tread design from the previous-generation NRW it replaces, is said by the company to have created a whole new tire category in North America—the "all-weather plus" performance tire.
Nokian said the NRW's new unidirectional tread design and all-weather silica compounding permit it to deliver the same high level of safety and performance year-round—whether under hot, cold, wet and severe winter driving conditions.
Nokian sales representative Kelly Gaede said that unlike the "all-season" tires common in North America—which Nokian likes to call "three-season tires," the NRW will not lose its traction advantage in deep snow.
The NRW meets the performance requirements of both the Rubber Manufacturers Association and the Rubber Association of Canada for severe winter service and bears the industry's mountain/snowflake symbol attesting to that fact.
Mr. Gaede said it is the first performance tire to qualify for that symbol.
Like other Nokian winter tires, the NRW is designed to provide superior lateral as well as starting and stopping traction, which Mr. Gaede said is the contributing factor in eight of 10 fatal winter accidents.
With speed ratings ranging from Q (100 mph) through V (149 mph), depending on construction and aspect ratio, the new NRW is available in a total of 47 sizes, including 13-, 14-, 15-, 16-, and 17-inch rim diameters.
