LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The International Tire and Rubber Association has selected the recipients for its annual Industry Awards. The honors—based on overall leadership ability, innovation and implementation of products and services, and proven support of the international transportation industry—will be presented during the association's World ITRA Expo, May 1-3 at the Opryland Hotel Convention Center in Nashville, Tenn.
Purcell Tire & Rubber Co. in Potosi, Mo., will receive the ITRA's Industry Leadership award.
Michael Rouse, president of Vicksburg, Miss.-based Rouse Rubber Industries Inc., will be the recipient of the Tire & Rubber Recycler Industry Leadership award. A longtime force in the rubber recycling arena, in 1998 Mr. Rouse repurchased from Bandag Inc. the scrap rubber processing company he founded. It specializes in producing very fine powders for various elastomers.
John Olson, head of the Olson Equipment Co. in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., will get the ITRA's Pioneer award, in part, for his 1987 invention of an envelope expander found today in most precure retread shops. For more than 16 years Mr. Olson's retail/commercial dealership, Olson Tire Service Inc. in Mt. Pleasant, has specialized in retreading farm tires. He has been in the industry for some 50 years and is an ITRA board member.
Gene Beck will be given the ITRA's Tire & Rubber Recycler Industry Pioneer award. The former co-owner of Cost Plus Tire Sales Inc., a wholesale dealership in Kansas City, Mr. Beck's firm produces tire-derived fuel for cement kilns and recycled rubber for other uses.
Gary Shaw will receive the association's Friend of the Industry award. He has been instrumental in helping Grey County in Ontario use asphalt rubber made from scrap tires on its roadways. Mr. Shaw also has raised awareness of the need to clean up scrap tire piles throughout the province.
All the award winners will be honored by ITRA at its Industry Hall of Fame Induction and ITRA Awards Banquet, to be held 6:30 p.m. April 30, at the Opryland Hotel and Convention Center in Nashville, Tenn.
ITRA also will recognize its Hall of Fame inductees—Harvey Brodsky, managing director of the Tire Retread Information Bureau, and former National Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association Executive Secretary Winston W. "Bill" Marsh.
