ST. LOUIS (Mar. 10, 2000)—The United Steelworkers of America and Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. began bargaining on a new contract March 7 in St. Louis. The current agreement, which covers 8,000 workers at nine BFS plants in the U.S., expires on April 23.
The USWA also is scheduled to begin talks with Michelin North America Inc. on March 15 in Knoxville, Tenn., covering about 5,000 union workers at three Uniroyal Goodrich plants.
The USWA said it will use the terms of a new contract settlement with BFS as a pattern for the tire industry.
