AKRON—German auto maker BMW A.G. has approved a 17-inch Goodyear run-flat tire for original equipment fitment on two BMW "Protection" models slated for introduc- tion in January. The 235/55R17 Goodyear Eagle NCT5 EMT run-flat tire was designed specifically for the BMW 740iL protection models and can operate effectively without inflation pressure for up to 187 miles at 50 mph, the tire maker said Dec. 22.
The Akron-based firm said the tire achieves run-flat capability without noticeable trade-offs in performance, handling or riding comfort—a BMW prerequisite to its acceptance.
Goodyear said the latest BMW fitments are in line with its strategy of introducing run-flat technology simultaneously to both the original equipment and replacement markets.
The tire maker also supplies Goodyear- and Dunlop-brand run-flats for OE fitment on the BMW540i Protection vehicle. All three BMW models come with a low-pressure sensor system to warn drivers if a tire should lose air.
