BIRMINGHAM, England (Jan. 6, 2000) — Goodyear Dunlop Tires Europe B.V. this year plans to phase out truck tire production at its Dunlop Tyres UK tire plant in Birmingham, resulting in the anticipated loss of 650 jobs.
Production of car, light truck, motorcycle and racing tires will continue at the 84-year-old plant, where total employment stands at 1,700, the company said.
The move will eliminate annual capacity at the plant for 400,000 medium truck tires, although a company spokesman said the lost production would be taken up by other Goodyear-Dunlop sites in Europe.
Goodyear-Dunlop operates three other truck tire plants in western Europe. The job cuts are expected to take effect soon after a 90-day consultation process with trade unions, a Dunlop Tyres spokesperson said.
