Treadways to build mega-warehouse NORTH WALES, Pa.—Treadways Corp. is planning to construct a 450,000-sq.-ft. warehouse in Southaven, Miss., to service all markets east of the Rocky Mountains, excluding New England.
Construction is scheduled to begin in January and should be completed by mid-August, said President and CEO Dan Wire.
The warehouse, which will have capacity for nearly 1 million tires, will house all six of Treadways' brands: Sumitomo, Laramie, Eldorado, Jetzon, Telstar and Centennial. The firm plans to consolidate or close its smaller, regional warehouses once the Southaven facility is on stream, Mr. Wire said.
Conti General recalls truck tires
WASHINGTON—Continental General Tire Inc. has recalled 4,750 General S380A truck tires, size 295/75R22.5, because of deflation problems.
Cracks forming at the point of attachment of the sidewall to the square bead wire bundle are damaging the plies on these tires, CGT said. The tires were manufactured between December 1998 and February 1999 and bear serial numbers from A3371E5488 through A3371E5089. The S380A is a premium-grade steer tire used on over-the-road trucks.
RPN names Ono exec of the year
AKRON—Rubber & Plastics News, a sister publication of Tire Business, has selected Bridgestone/ Firestone Inc. Chairman and CEO Masatoshi Ono as its 1999 Rubber Industry Executive of the Year.
RPN credited Mr. Ono for transforming the former Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. from a firm that was "hemorrhaging hundreds of millions of dollars," closing tire plants and laying off thousands of workers into North America's second-largest tire maker.
The publication also lauded Mr. Ono for expanding BFS' customer relationships, nurturing communication among the the company's 22 business units, revitalizing the Firestone brand through its success in Indy-car racing and increasing productivity.
Michelin, TANA offer scholarships
GREENVILLE, S.C.—Michelin North America Inc. and the Tire Association of North America announced that applications for their joint scholarship program are now available.
Michelin and TANA will award three scholarships—two $5,000 scholarships and one $10,000 scholarship— to high school seniors who are either part-time employees or dependents of full-time employees of a TANA dealer-member.
The application deadline is Feb. 28.
Uniroyal NailGard named `good buy'
NEW YORK—Michelin North America Inc.'s Uniroyal NailGard self-sealing tire has received Good Housekeeping magazine's "Good Buy" award for 2000.
Uniroyal is the first tire to receive the award in the five-year history of the program, which recognizes products for exceptional performance and problem-solving features.
The magazine is profiling the NailGard tire and 9 other products in its January issue.
