WASHINGTON—Shipments of tires to the U.S. original equipment and replacement markets rose in August, compared with year-earlier levels, in all categories except heavy truck tires, according to a recent report from the Rubber Manufacturers Association. In the aftermarket, the greatest increase was in medium and wide-base truck tires, where August shipments climbed 7.4 percent and were up 7.7 percent for the first eight months of the year.
The greatest increase on the OE side was in light truck tires, where shipments surged 26.7 percent for the month and 25.7 percent for the eight months.
In the passenger tire category, replacement shipments climbed 4.7 percent in August and 4.4 percent for the year to date, while OE shipments grew 7.7 percent and 10.5 percent for the month and year, respectively.
In the Canadian aftermarket, passenger tire shipments fell 5.2 percent in August, while shipments of truck and bus tires (including light truck) jumped 19.4 percent.
