SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.—Discount Tire Company Inc. CEO Bruce Halle and his wife, Diane, have received the "Spirit of the Children" award from Childhelp USA, a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based organization dedicated to preventing and treating child abuse. Mr. and Mrs. Halle were honored for their "numerous philanthropic efforts" at a black-tie benefit awards presentation Oct. 23 in Phoenix.
Mr. Halle has been involved with the American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes and Special Olympics, in addition to Childhelp.
Mrs. Halle has been active in supporting the Arizona Cancer Center, the Arizona Commission for the Arts, Childhelp USA and several other regional organizations.
At the banquet, Bill Sharp, president of North American Tire at Goodyear, announced that Childhelp USA's 24-hour telephone hotline number will appear on the illuminated night signs of Goodyear's blimps as they fly over hundreds of cities during the next year.
According to Childhelp USA, a non-profit organization founded in 1959, it operates the only nationwide 24-hour, seven-days-a-week hotline that is dedicated to providing information and referrals to prevent child abuse.
That emergency hotline—(800) 422-4453— has a database of more than 55,000 social service and support resources. It offers crisis intervention and information.
The organization also provides residential treatment centers for severely abused children, group homes, foster family selection, training and certification, and child abuse prevention programs.
