WASHINGTON—Aftermarket shipments of passenger, light truck and medium/wide base tires roared ahead in June from the same month a year ago. The lone exception, as has been the case for most of this year, was heavy truck tires, where shipments to the replacement market fell 8.3 percent during the period.
Light truck tires led the monthly growth parade, with aftermarket shipments growing 8 percent. Passenger tire shipments came next with 7.1 percent growth. Medium/wide base truck tires posted a 5.3 percent increase.
Original equipment shipments followed the same script with even more dramatic increases.
Shipments of OE light truck tires again led the way, improving 42.4 percent from June 1998.
Next were OE passenger shipments, up 36 percent with medium/wide base following with a 21.8 percent increase. Those for heavy truck tires continued to slump, falling 42 percent for the month.
