NHTSA to probe spare-tire cables
WASHINGTON—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an engineering analysis—upgraded from a preliminary evaluation—in its investigation of the spare-tire cables on 2.28 million 1991-96 Chevy S-10 pickup trucks from General Motors Corp.
NHTSA has received 171 complaints about the alleged problem, including notice of 17 accidents and one injury. According to the complaints, the wire cables holding the spares to the trucks can fail, causing the spares to fall while the vehicles are moving.
The agency also has begun a preliminary evaluation of the blowout of two left tires on a 1998 Jayco Eagle Travel Trailer. Turbulence from a passing semi-trailer allegedly caused suspension shift in the Jayco trailer, which allowed the shock absorber to pierce the tires, NHTSA said.
Falken, Honda issue recalls
WASHINGTON—Falken Tire Corp. is recalling 1,897 tires, size LT245/75R16, manufactured between January 1996 and June 1997 and used on Alfa Model 235 trailers.
If the tires are underinflated or the trailers overloaded, Falken said, the raised white lettering can separate from the sidewall and cause a blowout.
Also, American Honda Motor Co. is recalling the floor mats on 931,185 1996-98 Honda Civics, because they can become mispositioned and interfere with the accelerator pedal.
TANa to offer risk training
RESTON, Va.—The Tire Association of North America is offering two new video training programs on risk management for managers and employees.
The programs are sponsored by Universal Underwriters Insurance of Overland Park, Kan.
``These training programs are TANA's latest efforts to offer low-cost training for tire dealers,'' said President Jim Shook. ``And, with the support of Universal Underwriters, the new programs will be offered absolutely free.''
The first video, ``Management Training,'' is a two-tape series that helps tire dealers train their management staff about risk management, effective employment practices and loss prevention.
The second video, ``Employee Training,'' is a five-tape series that addresses how to create a safe working environment, focusing on driving and delivery and handling hazardous or flammable materials.
Dealers can order the programs by calling TANA at (800) 876-8372.
