AGOURA HILLS, Calif.—Michelin brand tires were rated the best replacement tire in the car/compact van and light truck categories of J.D. Power and Associates' 1999 Replacement Tire Customer Satisfaction Study. In a survey of 15,300 U.S. vehicle owners who recently replaced their tires, Michelin retained the top spot in the light truck category for the fifth consecutive year and reclaimed the top position in the car/compact van category.
Big O, the top-ranked brand among car/compact van replacement tires last year, finished second; Cooper was third.
Michelin's BFGoodrich and Uniroyal brands were tied for second among light truck owners.
Agoura Hills-based Power said Michelin scored well for ride, wearability and special traction (traction in snow and off-road conditions).
A separate part of the study noted The Tire Rack, a South Bend, Ind., mail order tire retailer, scored highest in customer satisfaction in both categories. Rating dealers on service, product and price, Tire Rack's best scores were for brand selection, tire lines and sizes.
But the study indicated overall customer satisfaction with replacement tires declined for the third straight year.
