WASHINGTON—Coming off a record-setting year in 1998, shipments of passenger, light truck and medium and wide-base truck tires to the U.S. replacement market rose across the board in January, compared with the year-earlier month. Truck tires got off to an especially strong start as light truck tire shipments climbed 10.7 percent, while those of medium/wide-base truck tires jumped 12.9 percent, according to data from the Rubber Manufacturers Association.
Radial tire shipments grew at an even faster pace, rising 13.7 percent for light truck and 13.2 percent for medium/wide-base truck tires.
Shipments to original equipment manufacturers also surged, up 27.6 percent for light truck and 13.5 percent for medium/wide-base truck.
In the passenger tire category, aftermarket shipments advanced 0.6 percent in January, while OE shipments rose 0.5 percent.
