Openings A to Z Tire Co. Inc. of Amarillo, Texas, has purchased a 43,000-sq.-ft. building in San Antonio to expand its warehouse operation and begin manufacturing truck retreads.

Formerly a tarp and awning manufacturing plant, the facility will now house about 20 employees, offices, warehouse space and a retread plant.

A to Z plans to use both Marangoni pre-cure and Teknor-Apex systems to produce about 140 retreaded tires per day.

President Philip Nussbaum said A to Z produced passenger retreads until about 20 years ago. It has several thousand wholesale customers in addition to its 26 retail and commercial locations in four states.

Englewood, Colo.-based Trans American Rubber Inc. moved to a new location in early February.

The company, which opened in 1976, purchased and renovated a 60,000-sq.-ft. warehouse for its nationwide wholesale business.

Trans American imports tires from Taiwan and Korea under its own brand. President Al Stone said the wholesale-only firm has annual sales of about $10 million and has plans to expand its business by acquisition.

Mr. Stone also said Ron Patrick, previously with Goodyear and Firestone, has been hired as sales and marketing director and new product development manager.

    Expansion

Donald B. Rice Tire Co. of Frederick, Md., has acquired Holmes Tire Co. of Mount Airy, Md.

Former owner, Pat Holmes, and his staff will continue to operate the dealership, which will become a Rice Service and Tire Center.

Rice Tire now has 11 locations and operates retail, commercial and wholesale divisions. It opened a truck center in Forestville, Md., in 1997.

The Mount Airy location will sell Goodyear, Uniroyal, BFGoodrich, Regul and Michelin brands and offer most auto services.

The firm has wholesale delivery routes in six states.

Bayshore, N.Y.-based Wholesale Tire Co. (WTC) has increased its roster of American Car Care Center dealerships with the opening of its latest location in Island Park, N.Y.

The new WTC location, formerly Richman Goodyear, has been renovated and updated with state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment. It is WTC's second new store this year.

The dealership will offer customers and area residents games, prizes and free food as part of ongoing grand opening specials for the next several months.

Wholesale Tire now has 17 locations in the New York City area.
