AKRON—Pirelli Tire North America and Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. are the latest tire makers to certify winter tire lines as meeting the Rubber Manufacturers Association's new "severe snow traction" standard. Tires that meet the new standard are eligible to carry a small icon on their sidewall consisting of a stylized mountain and snowflake. Both BFS and Pirelli said they will begin putting the symbol on winter tire lines this year.
Pirelli lines that will get the new designation include the Winter 210 Asimmetrico, the Winter Ice Direzionale and Asimmetrico and the W160 Studdable.
For BFS, the following lines have met the new standard: Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50, MZ-01 and MZ-02; Bridgestone Winter Dueler; Bridgestone WT-04 and WT-14; Firestone Winterfire; Dayton Widetrack Wintertrax; and the President Wintertrax (available in Canada only).
To meet the new RMA standard, the tires must meet a specified level of performance on a snow traction test, as well as requirements covering tread patterns, structure and materials.
As previously announced, Goodyear, Michelin North America and Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. also have certified winter tire lines as meeting the new RMA standard.
