WASHINGTON—January replacement tire shipments outpaced those of the 1996 month in all categories, according to shipment data from the Rubber Manufacturers Association. Replacement passenger tire shipments increased to 14.1 million units—a 4.78-percent increase over the year-earlier month. Light truck replacement tires rose 6.64 percent to 2.3 million.
Shipments increased both in the medium and heavy truck categories with medium/wide-base truck tires rising 19.4 percent to 899,000 units and heavy truck tires jumping 25.9 percent to 23,300.
On the original equipment side, passenger tire shipments increased 5.59 percent to 4.93 million along with an 8.23-percent rise in light truck tires to 539,000.
OE medium/wide-base truck tires dropped 7.77 percent to 380,000. Heavy truck OE tires, however, held steady at 7,000.
In the Canadian market, passenger tire shipments dipped 2.17 percent to 861,600 units, while truck and bus tires increased 4.05 percent to 239,000.
