Sears planning major expansion
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill.—At its Feb. 12 analyst conference in Chicago, Sears, Roebuck and Co. said it plans to own about 1,400 tire stores and auto centers by the end of the century, and this summer will convert its Tire America and NTW outlets to a single new, as yet unnamed format.
The retailer currently has 770 Sears Auto Centers, 161 NTW and 127 Tire America outlets. Most of its 342-store growth in the next three years will be in the new off-the-mall format, which will be unveiled March 19, according to a spokesman.
