AKRON—Joseph ``Joe'' Keebler, longtime business editor of the Akron Beacon Journal and frequent contributor of news articles to the tire trade press during the 1960s and '70s, died Dec. 11 in an Akron rest home at age 92. A native of Akron, Mr. Keebler retired in 1976 after 54 years in the newspaper business.
Considered the city's best-known ``rubber journalist'' of his day, he was on a first-name basis with virtually every tire company CEO.
During retirement, Mr. Keebler wrote articles for Modern Tire Dealer magazine and the National Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association's Dealer News about Akron's tire makers and the events which earlier had led to the city's rise and ultimately its downfall as the ``Rubber Capital of the World.''
He leaves a son, one daughter and six grandchildren.
