National Rubber Co. Inc. of Toronto bought Baker Rubber Inc. of South Bend, Ind., the largest U.S. producer of crumb rubber; Investment firm Buffalo Ventures Inc. acquired the remaining shares of Dunn Tire Corp., a 19-outlet retail dealership based in Buffalo, N.Y., and installed one of its shareholders, Randall Clark, as chairman. The move rejoined Mr. Clark, former chairman and CEO of Dunlop Tire Corp., with Ric Miller, a former Dunlop executive vice president, who has been president of Dunn Tire since 1993;
Retreader Treadco Inc. entered the Los Angeles market with the purchase of Five Brothers Inc. in Walnut, Calif.;
Ray Carr Tires Inc., a retail/commercial dealership and retreader based in Harrisonburg, Va., acquired the assets of Chicago-based Achievor Tire L.P., a bead-to-bead passenger tire retreader;
Treadways Corp., d.b.a. Sumitomo Tire (U.S.), acquired the Jetzon, Laramie and Telstar private brands by purchasing Hoffman Tire Co. (d.b.a. Jetzon Tire & Rubber Co.) and Laramie Tire Distributors Inc.
Calibur System Inc. closed its Roadway Tire Co. truck tire retreading operation in Columbus, Ohio, headed by President Peggy Fisher;
National Tire Services Inc., a large collector and processor of scrap tires, liquidated its assets, most of which were purchased by a new company, Environmental Scrap Tire Recovery Systems Inc., in Mentor-on-the-Lake, Ohio;
A year after the death of co-founder Donald Carr, Lansdale & Carr's various tire operations, including 4Day Tire Stores and Macho Tire Co., are closed, though three former 4Day Tire franchises remain in business;
