QUINCY, Ill.-Employees of Titan Wheel International Inc., parent company of Titan Tire Corp., got their turn at the ballot box Nov. 5. What they didn't get, however, was the extra vacation day their employer had promised as an incentive to get them to vote. A few days prior to the presidential election, the Federal Elections Commission informed Titan it is illegal to offer any type of incentive to encourage individuals to vote.
Titan President and CEO Maurice Taylor Jr., who earlier had made an unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination, said he was ``appalled'' that the company's effort to induce working men and women to vote was met
with resistance from the federal government.
``We hear all the time in the media about voter apathy,'' said Mr. Taylor, ``and yet the media remains silent when the government blocks a common sense way to increase political participation. More businesses and the media need to step up and challenge the government to change this asinine law.''
