TORONTO-Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd. recently appointed Gilbert Bennett, a former corporate lawyer and head of Ontario Casino Corp., as chairman of the giant retailer. He replaces Earl Joudrie, who temporarily quit the post in May following his estranged wife's trial on attempted murder charges.
At the company's annual meeting in May, Mr. Joudrie announced he was taking a leave of absence from the company until June 30. He later decided to quit the post altogether, Canadian Tire said.
On Jan. 21, 1995, Mr. Joudrie was shot six times by his wife, Dorothy, after visiting her to discus final divorce details over coffee. The couple had separated in 1989.
Mrs. Joudrie was charged with attempted murder. A jury decided this May that she committed the act, but was not criminally responsible due to a metal disorder.
