FLINT, Mich.-To enhance its dealerships' service, General Motors Corp. has rolled out its new Service Parts Operations (SPO) nationwide. William J. Lovejoy, a GM vice president and SPO general manager, said the GM Parts System is the result of a new philosophy of encouraging dealers to stock more part numbers, streamlining parts ordering and delivery.
However, if a needed part is not in a dealer's inventory, explained Nick Nickell, the system's project manager, the dealer first tries to purchase it locally from another source. If unavailable, an order is then placed with SPO and assigned an order type based on urgency. The most critical orders are delivered by SPO within 24 hours.
