Dealers considering a franchise program might want to find out how the franchiser measures up to the Fair Franchising Standards adopted by the American Association of Franchisees and Dealers. These standards include calls for the recognition of:
A franchisee's ``substantial equity interest'' in his business and the right of ``evergreen renewal'' of his contract;
The right of franchisees to ``reasonable market protection'' against encroachment;
Inclusion of franchisees in decision-making on advertising strategies and expenditures;
The right of franchisees not to be subject to non-compete covenants at the end of a contract when a reasonable right of renewal is not afforded; and
Franchisees' right to participate in an independent association and to collectively bargain.
