DES MOINES, Iowa-Iowa's Occupational Safety and Health Bureau has proposed fines totaling $173,250 against Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. for safety violations alleged to have occurred at the firm's Des Moines plant between October 1995 and March 1996. On Jan. 3, the state agency levied fines against BFS totaling $147,150 for alleged violations of various health and safety rules.
The agency conducted investigations at the plant following complaints by workers there.
A Bridgestone/Firestone spokesman declined to comment on the allegations except to say the Nashville, Tenn.-based firm plans to appeal the agency's action before an administrative law judge.
The United Steelworkers of America, which represents a few hundred workers in the plant, maintains the agency's safety violation findings have merit.
