In response to Mr. Edwin J. Cohn's letter ``Differing view on tire tax'' in the Feb. 19 issue: Yes, Eddie, ``the sky is falling!'' Senate Bill 2147 has been introduced to the California legislature by Senator Lucy Killea of San Diego. It places a $2 tax on every new tire sold in the state of California to subsidize end users of scrap tires.
The Western States Tire & Automotive Service Association (WSTASA) believes it is in the best interest of every tire dealer in the state to prevent or discourage passage of this bill.
As tire dealers, we meet competition by operating more efficiently and do not expect a windfall from the state. Private enterprise and capitalism is what made our country and this is one more ``subsidy'' we shouldn't allow.
In November of 1995, the WSTASA Board of Directors voted to fund a mail campaign to inform all its members-as well as tire dealers throughout the state-of this pending legislation.
This involves all of us in California. So let's work together to defeat this legislation. Please call or write your state representative.
Preprinted postcards are still available through the WSTASA office. Call (800) 576-2837.
