DES MOINES, Iowa- He didn't win the Iowa caucuses, but tire executive Morry Taylor-whose company owns a tire plant in Des Moines-did walk away with at least one preference poll in the state. According to the Des Moines Register, Mr. Taylor won a straw poll at the Old Depot Restaurant and Pub in Adel-that is, after he bought a round of beers during the last hour of the pub's ``Thirst in the Nation'' poll. It counted votes for each candidate by the beer that was ordered.
``He had 4 percent when he walked through the door and 37 percent when he walked out,'' said Kevin Rice, owner of the brew pub.
Publisher Steve Forbes finished second with 27 percent of the 1,000 beers cast. He had been leading all day until Mr. Taylor showed up with about 30 campaign staffers and supporters.
