Goodyear appears to have hit a home run with the introduction of its new, long-wearing ``Infinitred'' passenger tire-warranted for as long as the purchaser owns the vehicle. Under the Infinitred's ground-breaking new tread-wear warranty, the manufacturer promises free replacement of the tire for up to three years after the date of its purchase. Thereafter, motorists are offered the option of buying identical replacements at half-price until such time as they sell or trade in their cars.
It's a concept consumers should find as easy to understand as the tire's unique and descriptive name is easy to remember.
Many prospective tire buyers are likely to grasp the significance of a ``lifetime'' tire easier than that of a treadwear warranty that promises a specific number of miles-even 80,000 or more of them.
And that's what some observers find particularly intriguing about Goodyear's new Infinitred program, which was introduced at the company's annual dealer meeting Feb. 5 in Las Vegas.
Securities analysts, in fact, are likening the Infinitred's significance to that of the award-winning Goodyear Aquatred, which debuted five years ago. Both tires, they point out, illustrate Goodyear's marketing savvy and ability to develop innovative products and programs to set it apart from the competition.
Moreover, the company obviously scored points with its dealers by promising to sell the Infinitred only through independent Goodyear outlets and company-owned stores.
This arms dealers with a unique and attractive new product they can use in competing with other long-mileage tires available in the marketplace.
Only time will tell if the Infinitred can duplicate the commercial success of Goodyear's Aquatred. But it's sure to make things interesting for the company's dealers-not to mention rival tire manufacturers.
Hats off to Goodyear for once again setting the industry's cauldrons of competition and creativity boiling!
