VANCOUVER, British Columbia-To focus on the importance of safety and loss prevention measures inside dealerships, the Western Canadian Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association has created a ``Dealer Safety Loss Award.'' The award will be an annual recognition of a member dealer who excels in promoting safety and reducing losses in his/her business. The first award recipient will be honored during the 1997 WCTDRA regional convention.
Criteria for the award, sponsored in conjunction with Federated Insurance Co., includes excellence in building and housekeeping maintenance, crime prevention measures, average number of call backs on shop work, monitoring of employee driving and accident records, number of safety meetings with staff and promotion of safety or loss prevention.
Joint show to discuss OSHA, workers comp
ST. CHARLES, Ill.-Occupational Safety & Health Administration regulations and workers compensation issues are among the topics slated for the combined convention of the Illinois State Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association and the Indiana Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association, March 1-2 at Pheasant Run Hotel & Resort in St. Charles.
John Rizzo of the U.S. Department of Labor will lead a seminar on ``All you want to know about OSHA'' and Federated Insurance Co. will conduct a lecture on ``How to save on workers comp premiums.''
Congressman Henry Hyde will be the featured speaker at the convention, which also will include a two-day trade show.

W. States TASA taps Redfern president
MODESTO, Calif.-The Western States Tire & Automotive Service Association has elected C. Dave Redfern of Redwood General Tire Co., Redwood City, Calif., president for a two-year term.
The trade group, formerly the California Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association-North, represents northern California and Nevada.
During the association's annual holiday party in Monterey, Calif., Dec. 2, the WSTASA also installed: Craig Schoen-thaller of The Tred Shed, Pittsburg, Calif., first vice president; Dwight Meadows of Cutino's Tire Center, Oakley, Calif., second vice president; and Tom Hanlon of Mission Tire Service, Hayward, Calif., secretary/treasurer.
ARA to update manual for retreading classes
LOUISVILLE, Ky.-The American Retreaders Association will offer 16 classes and five course subjects at its training center this year and update its ``Retread/Repair Process Manual'' upon which the classes are based.
The manual also will be printed in Spanish for the first time.
During the past year, 113 students from eight countries attended classes at the training center which opened in 1992 at the ARA headquarters in Louisville.
