We here at Centrelane Tire Ltd. could not believe the outcome of the lawsuit against Ress Enterprises, operator of Army Trail Tire & Service in Carol Stream, Ill., which was reported in your Aug. 21 issue. (The dealership was ordered to pay a $12.7 million legal judgment resulting from an accident involving a tire that had been repaired using an outside-in plug.)
As reported, the plug used to repair the tire on the Ford Bronco was not faulty and did not fail. The tire apparently went flat only after striking an object on the road.
This may have occurred even if the tire was new, or if it had been repaired using a Rubber Manufacturers Association-approved method (which includes removing the tire from the wheel and sealing its innerliner with a patch).
The real culprit in this case was the party that left the object on the road.
