WASHINGTON-Forty-seven tire models have treadwear grades of 500 or higher, according to the latest Uniform Tire Quality Grading figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Twelve of those tires have treadwear grades of 560, the highest recorded in Uniform Tire Quality Grading history.
In alphabetical order, they are the Cooper Grand Classic STE SR; Cordovan Grand Prix Touring; Dean Touring Edition; El Dorado Legend; Mastercraft Mark VII; Hallmark Ultra Touring GT; Kelly Aqua Tour; Lee Ultra Touring GT; Monarch Ultra Touring GT; Multi-Mile Grand Am Touring ST; Star Ultra Touring GT; and Winston Signature (C).
The booklet, dated August 1995 but released Oct. 24, was issued without a press release. In years past, NHTSA accompanied UTQG pamphlets with a press release giving a list of ``Best Buy'' tires.
