BILLINGS, Mont.-The Montana Tire Dealers Association will learn about the ``10 deadly sins of retailing'' during its convention, Jan. 19-20, at the Holiday Inn in Missoula. Keynote speaker Andrew Andoniadis of Andoniadis Retail Services in Portland, Ore., will discuss how dealers can avoid the ``10 deadly sins'' and improve their store profits. Other seminars will address issues on safety, marketing and tire repair.

The convention also will feature a two-day trade show.

For more information, contact the Montana TDA at its new headquarters: 1537 Avenue D, Suite 320, Billings, Mont. 59102; (406) 256-1005. Fax: (406) 256-0785.

    NTDRA seeks scholarship bids

GREENVILLE, S.C.-The National Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association and Michelin North America are accepting applications for the 1996 Michelin/NTDRA Scholarships, awarded to high school seniors who are part-time employees or are dependents of full-time employees of an NTDRA member firm.

This is the second year for the scholarship program, which awards one $10,000 scholarship and two $5,000 scholarships for post-secondary education at a college or vocational/technical school. The recipients are recognized for academic performance, good citizenship and community involvement.

    NEAITD contracts investigator

BURLINGTON, Mass.-In an effort to help members curb internal thefts, the New England Association of Independent Tire Dealers is offering a new member service through a local investigation firm.

The association has negotiated a member discount with Frantz Warner Associates Inc., which will provide a confidential investigation of a company for employee dishonesty. The service ranges from spot checks to a complete probe of the entire company.

NEAITD Executive Director William Boutwell said his association management company represents 10 trade organizations and employee theft is a constant concern among all the memberships.

A ``couple of dollars'' worth in slippage, shortages or pilfering can add up to thousands of lost dollars over a course of a year, he said.

    In Brief. . .

During the recent National Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association convention in New Orleans, the Supplier Group Executive Committee met Oct. 13 and named Jim Ison of the Automotive Diagnostics division of SPX Corp., Kalamazoo, Mich., chairman; Tom Formanek of Stellar Industries Inc., Garner, Iowa, chairman-elect; and Dan Hunstiger of Truflex/Pang Rubber Products Co., Los Angeles, vice chairman, for a one-year term.

The Private Brand Tire Group tapped Samuel ``Skip'' Viola of El Dorado Tire Co., Troy, Mich., president; Thomas Brawley of Universal Cooperatives, Minneapolis, first vice president; Bill Hirst of Telstar Tyre & Rubber Co., Norristown, Pa., second vice president; and Ray Evans of Gans Tire Co. Inc., Malden, Mass., secretary/treasurer, for two-year terms during the group's meeting, Oct. 11, in New Orleans.
