Some road construction contractors in Virginia have abandoned the traditional sandbags in favor of Cleveland-based Plastic Safety Systems Inc.'s (PSS) Lifegard Channelizer ballasts, made of split scrap truck tires, which provide more stability and quicker assembly, according to a state Department of Transportation spokesman.
