NHTSA alters brake hose, fluid tests
WASHINGTON-The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has changed its compatibility tests for brake hoses and fluid because of changes in the brake fluid market.
Under current NHTSA safety standards, the control substance for measuring a brake fluid's compatibility with brake hoses is a combination of four commercially available brake fluids made by Delco, Dow Chemical Co. and Olin Corp.
But because one of the fluids has been taken off the market and another soon will be, the Society of Automotive Engineers petitioned NHTSA to allow a different mix for the control substance, including a new type of brake fluid. The agency granted the SAE petition, effective July 10.
In brief
Gibson Chemical & Oil Co., maker of Walker brand hydraulic brake fluid, is recalling 1,957 units of its super heavy duty brake fluid manufactured in May 1994 and sold in 12-ounce, quart, gallon and five-gallon containers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
The fluid is believed to be contaminated and could affect vehicle brake assemblies and braking performance.
