LOUISVILLE, Ky.-Retreaders have a higher opinion of the retreadability of a greater number of casing brands, suggests the most recent American Retreaders Association ``Medium Radial Truck Tire Retreadability Survey.'' Published in the June issue of the Tire Retreading/Repair Journal, the survey placed Goodyear, Bridgestone and Miche-lin first in separate categories that ranked the ``most retreadable'' casings.
More retreaders named Goodyear over other brands when asked their ``favorite brand to retread,'' followed closely by both Bridgestone and Michelin. But Bridgestone received the most combined points for the 10th straight year when retreaders ranked their favorite brands on a scale of one to five.
Michelin placed second and Goodyear third on the basis of combined points.
When trucking fleets, the end users of most retreaded tires, were asked their favorite brand to retread, Michelin came out on top with Bridgestone second and Yokohama third. However, Bridgestone finished first when ranked by the fleets on a point scale.
The rankings by fleets of particular tire companies remained fairly close to those from last year, the journal reported.
ARA Executive Director Marvin Bozarth noted that 11 of the top brands ranked this year received more than 1,000 combined points compared with only six companies accomplishing that feat last year.
``I think overall (the manufacturers) got rid of the on-going problems they had'' in the past, Mr. Bozarth said.
Retreaders also added more positive comments and fewer negative comments to their surveys this year, Mr. Bozarth noted.
The Retreading/Repair Journal, an ARA publication, sent surveys to 1,400 U.S. retread plants and 1,440 trucking fleets. The ranking was based on a 28-percent response rate from the retreaders and a 3-percent response from fleets.
