HOMESTEAD, Fla.-A friendly little wager has already proven beneficial for the health of the Florida Independent Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association's technician scholarship program-and two FITDRA executives. ``Both Henry Stansell (FITDRA executive director) and myself are, to put it mildly, somewhat overweight,'' said Jeff Crozier, who headed the association's scholarship program last year and is currently a regional director. ``So in May, at our first board meeting of the year, we challenged each other to a weight-loss competition, with the loser putting money into the program.''
Rules stipulated no one would have personal monetary gain from the bet.
Mr. Crozier said there was ``a frenzy of side bets going around the board,'' and, on the conservative side, ``there's about $5,000 (wagered) that will go into the fund as a result of the competition, no matter who wins.''
He said the membership of the FITDRA, which is based in Altamonte Springs, Fla., intends ``to have some fun with it over the course of the year,'' with the winner announced at the association's annual convention next May.
So far, Mr. Crozier reports he's lost 20 pounds, and says, ``Henry claims he's lost a `few' pounds. I'm ready to start having pizzas and cheesecakes delivered to his office!''
