Brisa profitable despite economy
IZMIT, Turkey-Despite an unstable domestic economy, Turkey's Brisa Bridgestone Sabanci Lastik Sanayi improved its profitability ratio to nearly 14 percent.
High interest rates and soaring inflation in Turkey last year severely crimped domestic demand for many consumer products, company officials said.
To offset the domestic malaise, Brisa stepped up exports to the point where they represented 45 percent of sales last year.
Sumitomo to invest in Germany
BERLIN-Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd. plans to invest more than $65 million in Pneumant Reifen & Gummi Werke GmbH.'s two tire plants in the former East Germany during the next three years, with ISO 9002 certification at the 47-year-old Riesa plant a primary goal this year.
Sumitomo said it is committed to solidifying its industrial base in Europe, but building a new plant would require considerably more investment than modernizing Pneumant.
