CUMBERLAND, MD.-Kelly-Springfield Tire Co. is realigning its sales and marketing division in an effort to improve customer service and simplify distribution. ``Properly serving the customer in the next decade will be the determining factor in success, and we're preparing now,'' said Don Salyers, vice president of sales and marketing.
The move will combine the Kelly Brand division, which sells mostly to retail customers, and the Associate Brands division, which distributes the Lee, Star and Hallmark lines largely through wholesale distributors, into one unit called the ``Kelly Division.''
Though the core businesses of each division will not change, salespeople will now be able to offer Kelly's complete line of house-brand tires to both groups while providing faster service through improved communications with fewer management layers, a company spokesman said.
Frank N. James, who had been vice president of Associate Brands, has been named vice president of the new division. He joined the company in 1977.
Kelly is also changing its Custom Brands division by splitting it into wholesale and retail divisions.
The split will allow each division to ``concentrate its efforts'' on its own segment of the market, be it retail or wholesale, rather than one division handling both, according to the spokesman.
John L. O'Rourke, with Kelly since 1980, has been named vice president of Custom Brands-Wholesale.
He most recently was vice president of custom brands. Richard A. Gibbons, who had been vice president of Kelly Brand, has been named vice president of Custom Brands-Retail. He started his career in 1967 with Goodyear, Kelly's parent company, in a retail store in Salt Lake City, and has been with Kelly since 1991.

Five of 10 regional manager positions will be eliminated when the move is complete, according to the spokesman. Kelly also will eliminate an unknown number of field sales force positions.
