SAN DIEGO-At the recent Continental General Tire Inc. (CGT) international dealer conference, company officials made a pledge to dealers to provide new and improved product lines. While on the original equipment level, CGT's tires can compete ``with the best in the world...on a daily basis,'' according to President Bernd Frangenberg, and its replacement market products are ``second to none,'' he admitted the tire maker's light truck lines have become somewhat dated.
The seven new or expanded tire lines unveiled at the meeting included improvements to Continental General's LT stable.
This summer-to meet the needs of the growing sport utility vehicle market-CGT will release the General Grabber ST, featuring an S speed rating and asymmetrical tread pattern for optimized treadwear, traction and handling.
Special traction ridges and full depth siping are designed to provide snow traction throughout the tire's life, the company said.
The Grabber ST will be the first LT line by CGT to be available in extensive P-metric, LT flotation and commercial sizes, according to the company. Initial sizes include: 30x9.50R15LT; 31x10.50R15LT; 32x11.50R15LT; P265/75R15; and P225/70R14.
The Hoosier Radial HT complements the Hoosier Performance Radial A/T line. Primarily for all-season use, CGT said the LT tire also can handle rugged off-road conditions.
The Radial HT has an aggressive five-row tread pattern, full-depth lateral grooves, siping and wraparound shoulder blocks to provide enhanced on-and off-road traction.
The tire comes with raised white letter sidewall styling and is currently available in five sizes: LT215/75R15; LT235/75R15; 31x10.50R15LT; 32x11.50R15LT; and LT265/75R16.
Other new tires unveiled at the conference:
General AmeriÃG4S-An all-season radial passenger tire for the original equipment and replacement markets, it will be the sole OE tire for the Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable in a P205/65R15 size.
It is the company's first full product designed using ``Finite Element Analysis,'' which CGT said reduces design time from an engineering standpoint and also contributes to improved overall product quality.
The tire is available with either S or T speed ratings, comes in 17 sizes and carries a 65,000-mile warranty.
ContiTouringContact CH95-An H-speed-rated all-season tire, it uses CGT's new EcoPlus compounding technology in both cap and base tread compounds to reduce rolling resistance.
The Continental-brand tire features a non-directional tread pattern with a flat contour and sporty sidewall design and is available in size 195/65R15 91H.
Several additional sizes are due to be introduced by mid-1995.
General S370-A premium, all-position, 16-ply radial truck tire, it is targeted primarily for heavy-duty short to medium hauls in on/off-highway applications.
Designed for the steer position and compounded to be cut-, tear-and chip-resistant, it features a four-rib tread design with four steel belts and stone bumpers in the center groove to prevent stone retention.
The S370 is available in sizes 11R22.5, 11R24.5, 295/75R22.5 and 285/75R24.5.
CGT also has added two new sizes to its General Timberskid VE-450 Steel Armor line of forestry tires.
The new sizes feature a 14-ply rating and a flange debris deflector. The company said four steel wire cord breaker plies extend from shoulder to shoulder to resist penetration through the tread face. The carcass consists of a nylon cord body and tube-type construction to fortify the sidewall and resist cuts and abrasions.
The new sizes of Timberskid VE-450 Steel Armor tires-67x34.00-25 NHS and 67x34.00-26 NHS-are designed for non-highway service.
