TUCSON, Ariz.-Earl B. Hathaway Sr., former president of Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., died Dec. 18 in Tucson. He was 91. Mr. Hathaway joined Firestone in 1927 and rose through its retail store operations, managing four different outlets and becoming district manager in Detroit in 1938.
Mr. Hathaway moved to Akron in 1941 as wholesale sales manager and progressed through various sales positions to vice president of sales in 1959.
He joined the Firestone board in 1960 and became an executive vice president in 1962. He was named president in 1964 and held the position until he retired in 1970.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret, two sons, a daughter, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
CANTON, Ohio-Firestone's oldest tire dealer, Harold E. Ziegler Sr., died Dec. 8 in Canton. He was 94.
Mr. Ziegler co-founded Ziegler Tire & Supply Co. in Canton with his older brother, Oliver, in 1919, conducting the final negotiations with Harvey Firestone Sr., the tire maker's founder.
Younger brothers Herbert and Norman joined the company in 1925 and 1931, respectively.
In the late 1930s, the company expanded into the bulk oil business and changed its name to Ziegler Tire & Oil Co., as it is now known. It entered the retreading business in the early 1940s.
In 1952, Mr. Ziegler took a seat as one of five members of Firestone's first dealer council.
Today, Ziegler Tire has 13 retail and commercial outlets, three Bandag shops and a warehouse.
Mr. Ziegler officially retired in 1965 but continued as a board member, visiting the dealership a month prior to his death, said his son, Harold Jr., company president.
Another son, John ``Jack,'' is Ziegler Tire chairman, and grandsons John Jr. and Bill Ziegler are marketing manager and secretary-treasurer, respectively.
Two great-grandsons, Brian and Patrick Ziegler also work in the family business.
Mr. Ziegler's other survivors include: his wife, Emma; younger brothers Herbert and Norman; two other grandchildren; and four other great-grandchildren.
