The U.S. increased its lead over Japan as the world's No. 1 producer of passenger tires, boosting production 2.5 percent to 197.5 million units. It also made gains on Japan as a truck tire manufacturer, producing 6.4 percent more commercial tires in 1993 than the previous year. However, Japan still leads that category, followed by the U.S., Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Italy, respectively.
