DALLAS-Matthew Bentz, service manager for Fletcher's Cobre Tire, in Peoria, Ariz., was named NTDRA/ASE Certified Master Automobile Technician of the Year Sept. 8 during the National Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association convention. The award is presented annually during the convention to the NTDRA-member technician who receives the highest composite score on all eight automobile tests and has achieved Master Automobile status within each fall or spring testing period from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
Mr. Bentz, who has worked for Fletcher's Cobre Tire since 1991, is described by Wayne Hess, company vice president of retail stores, as ``not an 8-to-5 kind of guy.''
``He opens when he needs to and closes when he needs to,'' Mr. Hess said.
One quality which won Mr. Bentz the award is his desire to keep up to date on industry trends and technical developments through trade journals and training, Mr. Hess said. He added that Mr. Bentz's enthusiasm for keeping up with technology extends to fellow employees.
``Education never stops,'' said Mr. Bentz, a Lansing, Mich.-native who became interested in automobiles at the age of 18 while enrolled in a high school small-engines class. ``I keep learning all of the time. Every day I work I'm training.''
For winning the award, Mr. Bentz received prizes including: complimentary registration and tickets to the NTDRA convention and trade show; round-trip transportation and hotel accommodations; $500 cash; and a personalized plaque.
